What's important to keep in mind about 1930s New York is that The Great Depression was in it's prime with financial strain dampening the mood of the people. I noticed when an old, black and white photo is colorized like the one below, the colors always seem dull and washed out, quite reminiscent of the atmosphere during that time.

Before shifting to Procreate for iPad pro, I tried my hand at digital painting using a Wacom Intuos and Adobe Photoshop. My initial design was stored on a memory stick that got corrupted which I wish, at least as a reference for the piece I did finish (found below). During my time drawing with the Intuos, I used image references of a face and newsboy hat to practice pressure sensitivity which turned out like this:
