VFX - Tutorials and Testing in After Effects

Having finished my storyboard, I’m now ready to begin trying out different effects that’ll appear in my short film. I filmed the scenes I’d be using for these tests at my desk on my phone so that I could use the added shaky motion to improve my ability to track the effects in post.

To produce a hologram profile with separate secondary animations, I found a very helpful tutorial from a YouTuber who goes by “ForceVisual”. In the tutorial, he teaches how to stabilize the footage before 3D tracking a point and creating a 3d camera and null based on those set coordinates.

The holograms consisted of solids and masks set to different opacities and operations (add and subtract) that allow me to create outlines and obtain what looks like a weaker shade even though it’s only using white. I added a delayed secondary animation that’s kept in the same separate composition from the main footage. I then parented the hologram composition to the null by making the hologram a 3D object and copying the X, Y and Z values from the null to the hologram.

The grid pretty much used the same process including the shooting method, stabilization, and 3d tracking. I generated the grid in a separate composition and created the scanning animation using a mask. When I brought it back through into tracked footage, I simply had to rotate the grid to align with the perspective of the table's surface and mask out obstructions such as keyboards, mice, and monitors.

I'd say both effects ended up looking pretty good:
