The best format for rendering and outputting video and audio from After Effects is AVI which stands for Audio Video Interleaved. I noticed when trying to preview the render in VLC that the video stuttered, lagging and skipping frames throughout. the reason for this is because of the huge file sizes ranging in the gigabytes. The solution I found was compressing the final render in Adobe's Media Encoder. I decided to use the following preset which reduced the file's size significantly whilst retaining a similar quality:
While I'm very proud of how my short film came out, there are scenes from the storyboard that didn't make the final cut that I would've liked to see fully developed and presented.
An example of one of these scenes is the opening transition of the desktop and the cables plugged into it. This mostly came down to bad lighting on the day I tried to film but the light shining through the window never matched what I already recorded. I also referenced a grid effect that didn't make the final edit, mostly because when I made the effect in the test renders, I found myself spending full hours editing masks that cropped out keyboards and mice as well as their properties which would've taken too long.
The reason why the Unity scene is only used in the transition when I'd planned for two more shots to take place in the scene (which I filmed) was because when I made the scene in Unity, I managed to get one screenshot for the transition before the program crashed, losing the scene and disallowing me to use the footage without continuity errors. I was also on a tight deadline for finishing and rendering the short and as a result, I had to cut back on what wouldn't have had such an impact on the short's narrative.
